How to remove the background from a GIF
- Load your GIF. Drop it on the page, paste it, or choose a file.
- Choose a method. AI · Fast for people, AI · High quality for anything else, or By color for a plain background.
- Remove the background. With AI, press Remove background and every frame is processed on your device. With By color, click the background in the Original preview.
- Clean the edges. Move Cut-off and Shrink edge until the outline looks right. Check it on the dark and light views.
- Download. Keep it transparent, or fill in a new solid color, then press Create.
AI or color: which method to use
AI · Fast (best for people)
A small model trained on portraits. It separates people from the scene quickly, even on a phone, and handles hair well. It is less reliable on animals, cartoons and objects.
AI · High quality (any subject)
A larger model that finds the main subject of each frame, whether it is a person, a pet, a cartoon character or a product. It downloads more the first time and takes longer per frame, especially without a recent graphics chip.
By color (plain and green-screen backgrounds)
Click the background and every pixel close to that color becomes transparent. It is instant and gives the cleanest result on white, black or green-screen backgrounds.
Make a transparent GIF
GIFs support full transparency but not soft edges: each pixel is either visible or see-through. That is why the result has a clean cut-off instead of a fade. Use Cut-off to decide how much of the soft outline stays, and Shrink edge to trim a thin halo of the old background. Preview the result on the dark and light views to see how it will look in a chat or on a web page.
Replace the background with a color
Choose Solid color under New background to put your subject on a clean color instead of transparency. This also removes the halo problem entirely, which helps when you know the GIF will be shown on one specific background.

Is my GIF uploaded anywhere?
No. The AI model is downloaded to your browser and runs on your device. Your GIF never leaves it.
Why is the first AI run slow?
The first time you use an AI method, your browser downloads the model: about 26 MB for Fast and more for High quality. After that it is stored by your browser and starts much faster.
How long does it take?
Each frame is processed separately, so a GIF with many frames takes longer. On a computer with a recent graphics chip it is usually under a second per frame. Repeated frames are reused automatically.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes. AI · Fast and By color work well on phones. AI · High quality works too but can be slow on long GIFs.
Why are there jagged or light edges?
GIF transparency is all-or-nothing per pixel, so soft edges become a hard outline. Raise Shrink edge to remove a light halo, lower Cut-off to keep more of the outline, or choose a solid New background that matches where the GIF will be shown.
Can I remove the background from a video or MP4?
Not yet. This tool works with animated GIF files.
Which AI models does it use?
AI · Fast uses MODNet and AI · High quality uses BiRefNet lite. Both are open models that run in your browser with Transformers.js.
